Panelists and moderators participate in a discussion during the New Media 101 seminar at Duke in D.C., where judges, journalists, educators, and digital creators explored courts and today’s evolving media landscape.

OOn February 16, 2026, the Bolch Judicial Institute of Duke Law convened approximately 50 judges, journalists, educators, and digital creators at Duke in D.C. for a day-long New Media 101 seminar, exploring how courts can engage thoughtfully in today’s evolving media landscape.

Throughout the day, participants examined the opportunities and challenges presented by podcasts, social media platforms, and other newer and emerging forms of media. The seminar brought together voices from the judiciary and the media ecosystem for candid conversations about communication, public trust, and civic education.

“The conversations throughout the day reflected both the challenges and the opportunities facing courts in today’s rapidly evolving media environment,” said Kim Mueller, a retired federal judge and director of the Bolch Judicial Institute. “It was encouraging to see judges, journalists, and digital creators come together in the same room to learn from each other and think creatively about how the judiciary can engage the public while complying with the judicial canons and strengthening understanding of the rule of law.”

Participants described the program as both practical and forward-looking. As one attendee noted in post-event feedback, the seminar provided “a far more optimistic sense of how the judiciary can find a place in the new media sphere.” Another participant praised the collaborative tone of the event, describing it as “excellent content — with real room for discussion.”
