As a member of Duke Law’s Judicial Studies LLM Graduating Class of 2025, Hawaiʻi Supreme Court Associate Justice Sabrina McKenna delivered the speech on behalf of her class at convocation. In her remarks, she reminded the graduates of their vital role in upholding the rule of law:
“The rule of law is the foundational bedrock of democracy,” she said. “Without the rule of law, autocracy prevails. Lawyers, the future of democracy is in your hands. But with the engagement of your class — as well as many others — and with an independent judiciary, I am optimistic that democracy and the rule of law will endure.”
