As the United States celebrates Law Day, attorneys across the country are retaking their oath and reaffirming their commitment to the core principles of law and justice. Our director, Paul W. Grimm, a member of the Maryland Bar, retook his oath and reflected on its significance.
Referencing a 1925 Virginia Law Review article titled The Lawyer as an Officer of the Court, Grimm explained what makes the oath unique: it designates attorneys as officers of the state — professionals entrusted with the responsibility to assist in the administration of justice.
“For all my colleagues who are lawyers,” Grimm says in the video, “I hope that if you give it some thought on this May Day, you think of the oath of office that you took, and reflect on what it means to support and defend the Constitution of the United States as the supreme law of the land.”
