Judge Joe Webster joined the John Hope Franklin Humanities Center to discuss his new book, The Making and Measure of a Judge, the Biography of the Honorable Sammie Chess, Jr. The book is the definitive biography of North Carolina’s first African American Superior Court Judge.

Judge Joe L. Webster is a federal magistrate judge for the U.S. District Court, Middle District of North Carolina. He graduated from Howard University magna cum laude in 1976, from Howard University School of Law in 1979, and from Duke University School of Law, where he earned a Master of Judicial Studies, in 2016.
